This project got under way in 2008. Since then there have been many volunteers over the last 17 years that have all contributed in one way or another in the restoration of this wonderful old Steam Ferry. There has been in excess of 23,000 VOLUNTARY hours gone into the Restoration Project.

The project started in Kerikeri where the Kerikeri Steam Trust was formed. A lot of work was done in Kerikeri before SS The Minerva was transported by road trailer to it's current location in the Opua Industrial estate.

The Minerva was a Steam driven Ferry with two engines that ran on steam that was created with a coal fired boiler. The Minerva will now be powered by a pinechip fed boiler to create the steam, rather than using coal as original.

SS The Minerva was launched.

SS The Minerva was launched in Auckland New Zealand, on the 10th of December, 1910. She was designed as a passenger ferry for the Auckland region.

Restoration on the Hull of the SS The Minerva.

The hull is made of New Zealand Kauri and over the years the timber has rotted resulting in major repair work on replacing the rotten timber and rebuilding the hull.

2025 - Hull restoration virtually completed.

The hull work has been completed. Timber replaced, new copper on the hull to the water line. A new Bow thruster will be fitted to ease the operation as well as having all the work done to Survey Standards.
